FAIRFAX, Va. - The
Patriots dropped the final two games of the Cherry Blossom Classic, losing to Bowling Green by a score
of 1-0 and to Cornell by a score of 7-4.
In the first game, sophomore Stephanie Maher pitched
brilliantly, going seven and a third innings, while scattering six hits,
striking out nine and allowing only one unearned run. Unfortunately, Mason was held to just one hit
in the eight inning ballgame. Senior
Tori Dudley's infield single to the shortstop in the fourth inning was the only
hit for Mason in game one.
At the beginning of the eighth inning, freshman Cori Prince
was placed on second and advanced to third base on a groundout by Katie
Rynex. However, the Patriots were unable
to take advantage of the opportunity and eventually saw Bowling Green capitalize on their first
chance in the bottom of the eighth.
In the second game, Mason was able to put together nine hits
but left 12 runners on base in a game in which they ultimately lost 7-4. As they away team, the Patriots started the
game by scoring a run off three consecutive singles to start the game by senior left fielder Alyssa See, freshman
centerfielder Cori Prince and freshman designated player, Brooke Blankenship,
who got the RBI. The Big Red however
bounced back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
After Cornell scored three more runs in the bottom of the
second, Mason responded with a run of their own in the top of the third when
senior shortstop Rachael Davies hit a sac fly to drive in Blankenship.
Mason scored again in the top of the fourth when right
fielder Tiffany Webb scored off an error committed by the Cornell first baseman
after Prince singled. But once again in
the bottom half of the inning, Cornell was able to score two more runs of their
own to bring the score to 7-3.
The Patriots scored one more run in the top of the sixth
when See singled and eventually scored on an RBI single from Blankenship. Despite the improved offensive production
from game one to game two, Mason did not have enough to mount a full comeback
in the games latter innings.
With the conclusion of the Cherry Blossom Classic, Mason
will now shift their focus to a home game on Tuesday against UMBC at 3:30pm at
the Mason Softball Complex.
