FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason track and field team kicked
off its outdoor season on Saturday, hosting the Mason Spring Invitational at
George Mason Stadium.
The men's team saw senior Nick Vaughn post two IC4A qualifying
marks, while the women had two ECAC qualifiers in freshman Kelsey Reese and junior Mandissa
Marshall.
Vaughn's qualifying marks came in the 400m and 200m dashes,
as he posted IC4A qualifying times of 47.36 and 21.70, respectively.
For the women, Marshall posted a height of 4.12m in the pole
vault, setting a school record in the event. Additionally, Kelsey Reese threw an impressive 45.44m in the javelin, giving her the sixth-best mark in school history in just her first collegiate meet.
Both squads also had impressive event finishes, combining
for six first-place finishes. On the men's side, sophomore Kirk Nguyen won both the
hammer throw (43.59m) and discus (43.88), sophomore Jason Wellington claimed the javelin
(54.00m), freshman Paul Akyen finished tops in the high jump (2.00m) and sophomore Kenzell
Crawford won the 110m hurdles (16.00).
Another top finish for the women was from sophomore Amanda Denger, who
claimed the 100m hurdles in a time of 15.24.
The Patriots return to action next Saturday at the University of Virginia Cavalier Kick-Off.
