HIGH POINT, N.C. - The George Mason lacrosse team could not
overcome a halftime deficit Saturday afternoon, falling 13-10 at High Point. Allie
Hilderbrandt completed a hat trick for the visiting Patriots, while Brittany
Pastrana picked up a season-high five ground balls.
Hilderbrandt led Mason (2-6) offensively with three goals,
while Emily Ellisen chipped in two. Ellisen was one of three Patriots to assist
on two goals as Caitlin Formato and Rachel Obregon also recorded two assists.
Pastrana scooped up a season-high five ground balls as Obregon added three and
a team-high four draw controls. Pastrana played the full game in cage,
recording nine saves, six coming in the first half.
Grace Gaeng led High Point (5-2) with four goals and four
draw controls, while four different Panthers added two goals apiece. Chelsea
Thompson assisted on three goals and finished the game with four ground balls
to match the team-high. Anna Wallingford picked up the win playing the full
game in cage, making five saves.
Obregon opened the scoring recording her 10th
goal of the season two minutes after the opening draw, completing an Ellisen
feed. Christie Dougherty knotted the score just under two minutes later before
Formato sparked a 3-0 Mason spurt to open a 4-1 Patriot lead with two goals
from Ellisen as the clock hit 20:59. The Panthers, however, answered scoring
six unanswered goals to reverse the advantage and take a 7-4 lead with just
over 13 minutes remaining in the period. Mary Schwartz and Hilderbrandt
combined to cut the score to 7-6, but the Panthers scored with 22 seconds on
the clock to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
High Point came out of the break scoring four of the first
five goals for a 12-7 lead before Hilderbrandt snapped the run with her third
goal of the afternoon at 11:26. The Panthers saw their last goal come at the
9:38 mark from Thompson before Katie Mascolo and Kirstin Russell scored to
account for the final score.
High Point won the advantage in shots (30-21), ground balls
(23-21) and draw controls (13-12) including a 10-5 advantage in the first
half. The Panthers also converted 3-of-7
free position shots, while Mason did not take a free position.
Mason returns to action traveling the short
distance to American on Wednesday, March
21 for a 4 p.m. opening draw.
