St. Louis, Mo. - In
front of a packed Scottrade Center, senior 197 pounder Mendbagana Tovuujav and freshman 125 pounder Vincent Rodriguez took
the mat for Mason.
In the first round, Rodriguez was the first wrestler to compete
for Mason, he lost by fall to North Dakota State's Trent Sprenkle in the
first period. Tovuujav took the mat
later in the afternoon facing the daunting first round matchup of Pittsburgh's
redshirt junior Matthew Wilps, the number three seed for the 197 pound weight
class. Despite losing the match 7-3,
Tovuujav battled hard and nearly earned a pin in the final seconds of the
match.
In the second round, Rodriguez was defeated in a 4-1
decision by redshirt sophomore Jared Germaine of Eastern Michigan. Rodriguez also fought throughout the match
and showed impressive promise for a true freshman. Tovuujav also lost in the second round, as he
was unable to avenge his last loss of the season in a rematch with Cambell's
redshirt senior John Weakley.
