Buffalo, N.Y. - Senior diver Derrick Butts finished
his weekend at the 2012 NCAA Zone A Championships by making history, becoming
the first male diver from Mason to ever qualify for Nationals.
Butts took first place in the one-meter dive by scoring 367.50
in the final round, with an overall score of 689.65. Butt's final round score allowed him to take
the championship in dominating fashion, beating the Harvard's Mike Mosca, the
second place finisher by 28.25 points.
Despite only qualifying in the one meter dive, Butts also placed
in the top 10 in the zone meet in the three-meter and platform dive. The senior took sixth in the three-meter dive
with a final round score of 332.90 and a total score of 687.50. In the platform dive, Butts finished seventh
overall, scoring 284.10 points in the finals and 299.50 points overall.
Butts was one of four men and four women to qualify for
Nationals from the Zone A meet. For
the men, Shinholser of Virginia Tech (three-meter), Ryan Hawkins of Virginia
Tech (three-meter) and Imbriglia of Virginia (platform) will join Butts (one-meter)
in competion in Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic
Center in Seattle, Washington on March 22nd.
