FAIRFAX, Va. – In
the final day of action at the Mason Invitational, the Patriots were defeated by
Hartford 3-0 but finished the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Cornell.
In the first game, Mason was led by freshman relief pitcher
Tiffany Harvell, who entered the game in the first inning and pitched six
scoreless innings, scattering just three hits and striking out one.
Hartford scored all three of their runs in the inning before
Mason recorded an out. Although Mason
battled in the game, equaling Hartford's six hits, they were unable to get the
timely hit needed in order to produce runs.
Despite not scoring any runs in the game, senior outfielder
Tori Dudley had an excellent offensive game, going two for three at the plate,
while batting first in the lineup.
The second game was another pitcher's duel, with neither
team scoring until the bottom of the fifth inning when junior first baseman
Reagan Doiron drove in freshman Cori Prince with two outs. Junior outfielder Samantha Barney then drove
Doiron in from third base to increase Mason's lead to 2-0.
The Patriots tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth
inning when pinch runner Tiffany Webb scored on an error by the first baseman,
making the final score of the game 3-0.
Sophomore Stephanie Maher pitched five innings and allowed
zero earned runs before freshman Casey Herring came in to earn her first save
of the year.
