FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason lacrosse team kept the game
close through the opening half, but Johns Hopkins used a strong second half to
defeat the Patriots 19-6 Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Rachel
Obregon recorded her first hat trick as a Patriot with three goals as Mason
dipped to 1-1 on the season. Johns Hopkins opened the season 1-0.
Obregon recorded three goals, while Mary Schwartz added two
for the Patriots. Caitlin Formato rounded out the scoring with Mason's final
goal of the afternoon. Formato finished the game with two assists, two ground
balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls. Kiersten Jauschnegg led
Mason with three caused turnovers and also picked up two ground balls. Brittany
Pastrana earned the start and recorded six saves, while Katie Teague played the
final eight minutes, allowing two goals.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring with a pair of goals to
take a 2-0 lead before Schwartz put Mason on the board on an assist from
Formato at 14:11 for a 2-1 score. Sarah Taylor gave Johns Hopkins a two-goal
cushion but the Patriots fired back with goals from Obregon and Schwartz to
knot the game at 3-3 with 9:27 in the first. The Blue Jays scored just over a
minute later to spark a 3-0 run before Obregon capped the half with a goal at
1:17 for a 6-4 Blue Jays lead at halftime.
Johns Hopkins outscored Mason in the second half 13-2 using
a 20-3 shot advantage and 10-6 edge in draw controls. Obregon snapped a 4-0
Blue Jays run to open the final period with her third goal of the afternoon at the
16:21 mark. Formato capped Mason's scoring with an unassisted goal with 2:40 to
play as Courtney Schweizer scored unassisted with just over a minute to
complete the scoring of the afternoon.
Mason returns to action welcoming UMBC to George Mason Stadium
on Saturday, February 25 for a 1 p.m. meeting.
