Wrestling Hosts Navy in First Home Dual of the Season

Mason Drops Conference Opener to Drexel in Grapple at the Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y.-  The George Mason wrestling team fell to Drexel 24-19, Sunday, in their conference opener. With the loss Mason falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association competition. Drexel advances to 4-5 and 1-1 in conference play with the win. The dual was held at Madison Square Garden in the Grapple at the Garden, the first collegiate wrestling event to be held in the Garden.

Drexel took an early 6-0 with a pin in the 125 weight class. Their lead would be short lived as Zach Isenhour tied the match at 6-6 by pinning Clayton Lutzow of Drexel 1:56 into his match in the 133 weight class.

The Dragons regained the lead with a 6-1 decision win at 141, Drexel now led the match 9-6 going into the 149 weight class.

Greg Flournoy gave Mason its first lead of the match with a 10-2 major decision win against Nicholas Maccini at 149. The Patriots led the dual 10-9.

At the 157 weight class, Jaaziah Bethea extended the Patriots lead to 13-9 with a 13-9 decision win over Noel Blanco.

In a close match, Ty Knepp was defeated by Connor Moran at 165 in a 9-8 decision match. Mason still held onto a 13-12 lead in the dual.

Drexel regained the lead with Kevin Matyas' 5-0 decision win over Ryan Hembury in the 174 weight class. The Dragons now held a two point lead over Mason's 13 points.

The Dragons extended their lead by eight points when Bryan Sternlieb pinned Corey Smith 4:56 into the match, Drexel now led the match 21-13.

Drexel secured the dual win with Brandon Palik's 4-3 decision win over Mason's Matt Meadows. Drexel led the match 24-13 heading into the 285 weight class.

Heavyweight Jake Kettler added six points for Mason when he pinned Jon Max White 4:11 into his match. Drexel won the dual with a final score of 24-19.

Mason will return to the mat when they travel to Washington, D.C. on December 20th to take on American University.
