FAIRFAX,
Va. - After two days of competition, the George Mason men's swimming and diving
team retain their second place standing from yesterday with 541 points and the
women currently hold third place with 384.5 points in the Patriot Invitational.
The
women trail just 9.5 points behind the University of Richmond, who are
currently in second place. The men are 38 points behind defending Colonial Athletic
Association champion UNC Wilmington, who currently holds the lead in the men's
meet.
Mason
got off to a strong start in the preliminaries this morning with Paige Impink
breaking the team record in the 100 Fly with a 55.64 mark. Impink would go on
to take second in the 100 Fly (55.75) final and in the 100 Backstroke final
(56.59). Melissa Davis finished just behind Impink in the 100 Back (57.18) in
third.
Megan
DeJong also had an impressive performance for the women taking first in the 200
Freestyle with a time of 1:53.95.
For
the men, senior David Kiss took first-place and matched the meet record in the
200 Freestyle with a time of 1:39.27. Fernando Rubio also had a first-place
finish for the Patriots in the 400 IM finishing with a mark of 3:58.14. Kyle
Sockwell finished just behind Rubio in the 400 IM taking second with a time of
3:59.05.
In
the last event of the day, the men's 800 Freestyle Relay team comprised of Joey
Kelly, Sockwell, Rubio and Kiss, took first-place with a 6:49.46 mark. Mason
will look to continue the momentum moving into the final day of competition
tomorrow.
Saturday's
preliminaries are set to begin at 10 a.m. with the finals at 6 p.m.
