George Mason Athletics Men's Cross Country 11/15/2012 9:53:00 AM

FAIRFAX, Va.-  This week's off the course features senior Sean Nestor a native of Madison, Conn. where he attended Daniel Hand High School. In the NCAA Regional Championships last weekend, Nestor was one of the seven runners running for Mason, he finished 91st overall with a time of 32:17.24.

GoMason.com: Why did you choose George Mason University?

Nestor: My strong interest in politics initially drew me to the D.C. area.  As a high school recruit, I was also impressed with the cross country program and Coach Gerard.  Mason was an excellent balance between my academic and athletic aspirations

GoMason.com: What are your goals for this season?

Nestor: A conference team title.  We have a very talented and dedicated group with a lot of depth and I believe we can make great things happen.

GoMason.com: Who would you say you look up to the most?

Nestor: My biggest role model would be Pat Tillman, an All-Pro NFL Safety who retired to enlist in the United States Army after the September 11 terrorist attacks.  He turned down a multi-million dollar contract the following season.  Pat Tillman gave up fame and fortune during the pinnacle of his career and made the ultimate sacrifice serving his country.  His life is an inspiration that there are greater causes beyond oneself.

GoMason.com: What does your typical off-season training consist of?

Nestor: Summer training begins with a gradual build-up of "base" mileage, leading into workouts that will prepare for the beginning of the season.  By August my weekly mileage will range between 90 to 100 miles.

GoMason.com: You run both cross country and track for Mason. Do you have a preference between the two, if yes, why?

Nestor: I enjoy cross country more than track.  Despite being all in the same relative lengths, courses can be drastically different, which creates a unique feel to every race

GoMason.com: What would you like to do after college?

Nestor: As a cadet in George Mason's Reserve Officer Training Corps, I will commission as a second lieutenant and serve as an officer in the United States Army upon graduation.  I would also like to continue running as a member of the all-army cross country team.
