Swimming and Diving Splits Weekend Meets

BALTIMORE, Md. - The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their meets against Loyola and Navy this Saturday, October 6th at Loyola University. The men's and women's teams defeated Loyola, 213-87 and 169-130, respectively. In a tight race the men ultimately fell to Navy 155-134 as the women fell 192-96.

The men dominated in the 200 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly taking first, second, and third in each race. Freshman Kyle Sockwell (1:53.47) took first-place in the 200 Backstroke followed by Steven Blakely (1:55.27) and Austin Witherow (1:56.44). Seniors David Kiss (51.49) and Cole Jamison (53.03) took first and second, respectively, in the 100 Butterfly followed by Tom Malone (53.46).

With a time of 53.79, Blakely also took first-place in the 100 Backstroke. In the 200 IM, Fernando Rubio took first-place with a time of 1:56.20 and just over a second later was Sockwell at 1:57.34. Mason's relay team, comprised of Joey Kelly, Travis Lauri, Witherow and Colin Schwartz, took first in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

In diving, John Schmitz took first-place for the men in the 3-meter dive with a score of 261.00.

For the women, Rebecca Anderson took first-place in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:21.13. Anderson was followed closely by freshman Megan DeJong at 5:22.46. Paige Impink (58.18) won the 100 Butterfly.

Sophomore Kara Tansill also competed well for the Patriots winning the 200 IM and placing second in the 100 Backstroke. Freshman Melissa Davis and Natalie Zoldork also had strong swims as Davis took second in the 200 Backstroke and Zoldork finished second behind Tansill in the 200 IM.

Swimming and diving returns to action Oct. 13, in their first home meet of the season, against Delaware at 1 p.m.
