FAIRFAX, Va.- This Out of the
Pool features Paige Impink, a native of Sinking Springs, Pa. where she attended
Wilson High School. In last week's meet against Delaware Impink won the 100
Butterfly with a time of 57.91. She was also the anchor of the 400 Freestyle
relay team, which took first place with a time of 3:38.58.
GoMason.com: Why
did you choose
George Mason
University?
Impink: I really liked how
diverse Mason is and how many opportunities there are in
the Northern Virginia/DC area.
GoMason.com: How did you get into swimming?
Impink: I started
summer swimming when I was
four
because my older sister swam
and
I got bored just watching.
GoMason.com: Did you always know you
wanted to swim in college?
Impink: No, I originally thought that I would
be playing water polo or
soccer in college.
GoMason.com: What is your favorite swimming event, and why?
Impink: I like swimming the 100
Butterfly because the stroke is very rhythmic
and when you swim it fast, it feels awesome.
GoMason.com: Do you have any pre-meet rituals that you
have to do
before you swim?
Impink: Just stretching a
lot and eating lots
of carbs. I like to visualize my races
before big meets.
GoMason.com: Who
would you say you look up to the most?
Impink: My parents
because they are very hardworking, and
if it wasn't for their support, I would not be
as successful in swimming and school.
GoMason.com: What are your goals for this
season?
Impink: I want the
whole team to get a lot
closer and
be more involved in the
community.
GoMason.com: Can you
explain what
a typical swimming practice entails? What is your favorite workout?
Impink: We swim
about 1,200 -1,500 yards for warm up. Then we have what
we
call a buffer set,
which prepares you
for
the main set. The
main set varies
day
by day.
Mondays
are freestyle days. Tuesdays
are longcourse IM
days. Wednesdays
are specific stroke days. Thursdays we have a longcourse recovery set. Fridays
usually involve racing from
the blocks. Saturday mornings are
longcourse and the
sets vary.
After the main set
we
warm down anywhere from 200-600 yards.
My
favorite workouts are longcourse IM sets
because I like working on all of the strokes, and
when we swim longcourse I can stretch
my
strokes out more. It also helps
my endurance.
GoMason.com: What was your favorite swimming
moment from the
2012 London Olympics?
Impink: I liked
when
Missy Franklin
won gold
in the 100 and 200 Backstroke because she is very modest and
team-oriented.
Even though she is still in high school, she is a good
swimming role model.
GoMason.com: If you
were stranded
on a deserted island,
what
three things would you take with you?
Impink: My dog,
food, and a computer with a lifetime
battery supply.
GoMason.com: What is your biggest
pet
peeve?
Impink: People telling me what to do.
GoMason.com: What would
you like to do after college?
Impink: I would like to travel, maybe serve two years for Teach for
America and eventually work as
a public relations specialist for a company or organization.
GoMason.com: If you
could visit any place in the
world, where would you go?
Impink: I went
to Italy for a week
this summer and would love to go
back!
GoMason.com: What is something that
most people don't know about you?
Impink: I love to
learn new
languages.
GoMason.com: From
a swimming stand point,
were you team Phelps or Lochte during the Olympics?
Impink: Both, but Phelps accomplished
some amazing feats in his career.
