FAIRFAX, Va.- The George Mason men's swimming and diving team defeated Delaware, 157-143, Saturday in a nail biter that was determined by the last relay event of the day, while the women fell to Delaware 206-92. The meet was held in the Jim McKay Natatorium and was the home opener for Mason and marked the first conference dual meet of the season for both teams.
Delaware and Mason were neck and neck going into the last event of the day, the 400 Freestyle relay. Mason's relay team, comprised of Austin Witherow, Colin Schwartz, Travis Lauri, and Joey Kelly, pulled through to defeat Delaware's relay team and secure the meet win for Mason.
The Patriot men were led by Fernando Rubio and David Kiss. Rubio won three events for the men in the 1000 Freestyle (9:43.98), 200 Backstroke (2:10.80) and 400 IM (4:03.09). Kiss won the 200 Free (1:43.79) and the 100 Butterfly (50.90). Also posting wins for Mason were Matt Tynan (200 Butterfly, 1:55.44), Kelly (50 Freestyle, 21.43), and Kyle Sockwell (500 Freestyle, 4:44.53).
In diving, John Schmitz had a strong showing with a win in the 3-mtr dive with a score of 270.15. In a close competition in the 1-mtr dive, Schmitz fell just six points short of Luke Winkler of Delaware to place second.
For the women, junior Paige Impink and freshman Melissa Davis each posted a win. Impink won the 100 Butterfly (57.91) and Davis won the 200 Backstroke (2:05.24). The women's 400 Free Relay team of Kelsey Sorensen, Kelly Dvoryak, Davis and Impink also had a first-place finish with a time of 3:38.58.
Swimming and Diving will have a two week break before they head back to the pool in the CAA POD meet held at Old Dominion University on November 2nd
