FAIRFAX, Va. - Mason's
men and women both took home impressive victories on Saturday in the pool
against George Washington University. The men came away with a 162 - 127 victory,
while the women finished the meet with a 179-108 advantage.
The men were led by sophomore swimmer Fernando Rubio, junior
standout swimmer David Kiss and star senior diver Derrick Butts. Rubio won the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:39.71
and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.25.
He also swam the second leg of Mason's 200-yard medley relay team that
finished in first place with a time of 1:35.44.
Kiss also won two events on the day, finishing first in the 200-yard
freestyle in 1:42.35 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.03.
Butts, a seven time CAA Male Diver of the Week award
recipient, won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 374.62 and
409.12 respectively.
The women were led to victory by four student-athletes who
each won two individual events on the day.
Senior Ashley Danner won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.82 and the
500-yard freestyle in 5:02.33. She also
swam the second leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
Freshman Kelly Dvoryak had one of her best performances of
the season, in which she won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.76 and the 200-yard
backstroke in 2:09.71. Sophomore Paige Impink also had a major contribution with her wins in the 100-yard butterfly
(57.97) and the 50-yard freestyle (24.61).
Senior diver Ali-Marie Murphy stood out above all women's
divers on Saturday by winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of
264.07 and 246.9 respectively.
Mason will have a few weeks off before hosting the CAA
Championships in the Aquatic
Center on February 22nd-25th.
