All of the CAA wrestling teams will be in the George Mason
University Field House on Saturday, January 21st for the 10th
annual CAA Duals. Mason will host the
event a week after hosting the Patriot Duals where they won the first match of
the day and lost the final two. Despite
the record, several Mason wrestlers had very productive days and showed signs
of being prepared for one of the biggest days of their wrestling season.
Freshman 125-pounder Vincent Rodriguez, junior 157-pounder
Jaaziah Bethea and senior 197-pounder Mendbagana Tovuujav all went 3-0 last
weekend and earned praise from Head Coach Joe Russell.
"I think it is great all of the CAA teams can come together
for this event," said Russell. "It's an honor that they allow Mason to
host the event on a yearly basis. It's
great for our team to see where we stack up against our conference competition.
I think our guys will show that we are ready to compete against the best
competition our conference has to offer.
This will also be another step to help us prepare for the conference
tournament in March."
With five mats in the Field House dedicated strictly to a
youth wrestling tournament, this will also be a great opportunity for Mason to
reach out to the community. Overall
there will be eight mats where competitions will be taking place simultaneously
throughout the day. The first round of
matches begins at 10am with the final round beginning at 4pm.
"There will be some
important individual match ups for our guys on Saturday," concluded Russell. "We will face nationally ranked
individuals. If we can pull off some upsets, it can help get a wrestler
individually and his conference weight class qualified for the national tournament."
