Annapolis, Md.--The George Mason women's tennis
team travelled to the Naval Academy this weekend to play in the 2011
Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational. Other teams participating in the
rain shortened event included host Navy, Howard, Towson,
Monmoth, Manhatten and Loyola.
The event was a tournament format, different from the usual dual format the Patriots play in. Mason faired well
in the doubles portion of the event held indoors at the Brigade Sports
Complex on Friday. In the A Flight Doubles the team of
Brooke Blackwell
and
Liza Davis won two matches before falling to
the eventual champs, Ariel Burke and Ayana Dow, 6-8 in the semi-finals.
Alison Wingo and
Ashley Delaney fell in the quarterfinals to the other
finalists, Nani Lizana and Andrea Samlin, 7-9.
In the B Flight
Doubles,
Tori Zalewski and
Kate Desiatnikova had a good run to
the semi-finals before falling to the powerful Howard team of Katelyn
Stokes and Anne Akhimien.
In the singles
events Wingo and
Andy Londen both made it to the quarter-finals in their respective brackets. Blackwell, Zalewski, and Desiatnikova registered wins in the
consolation bracket. Davis had to retire due to an injury
in her opening singles match.
The team will next compete in the Mason Women's Invitational at home on Friday Oct. 7.
