NEW ORLEANS – Five Mason track and field students-athletes,
Christopher Carrington, Lavell Handy, Adrian Vaughn, Nicholas Vaughn and
Rochelle Sceats, were named to the 2011 Division I All-Academic Track &
Field team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA). The group represents collegiate track & field's best in both
athletics and academics.
A total of 420 student-athletes representing 153 institutions compose the
group. Minnesota and Nebraska led the country with 12 All-Academic nods apiece
while Stanford and BYU was third and fourth in the nation, respectively, with
11 and 10 honorees.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the
student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and
have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a
student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national
top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective
listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org;
for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round
of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Christopher Carrington earned NCAA Indoor All-American status after
finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships in the 800 meters. He ran the
fourth-fastest time in the nation in the event posting a 1:47.30 while winning
the Valentine Invitational. He qualified for the IC4A Championships in the
800m, 1000m and Mile and was part of the Distance Medley relay team that
qualified for the IC4A.
Lavell Handy earned second-team All-America honors this season after placing
12th in the triple jump (15.71m) at the NCAA Championships, which was the top
finish of any CAA athlete at the event. He was selected as the Most Outstanding
Performer in field events at the 2011 CAA Championship after winning the long
jump (7.58m) and the triple jump (15.49m).
Adrian Vaughn earned NCAA Honorable Mention All-American after the
4X100-meter relay team qualified for the NCAA Championships. He was also named
an NCAA Indoor All-American after the 4X400-meter relay team finished sixth at
the NCAA Championships. He placed fourth in the 200m at the IC4A meet.
Nicholas Vaughn earned NCAA Honorable Mention All-American in the
4X100-meter relay and 4X400-meter relay after earning NCAA Indoor All-American status
after the 4X400-meter relay team finished sixth at the NCAA Championships. The
4X400 team finished 17th at the NCAA meet and the 4X100 team finished 20th.
Rochelle Sceats qualified for the ECAC Championships in the
3000 meters and 5000 meters and in the longer of the two events, set the school
record. She finished second at the ECAC Championships in the 5000 meters with a
time of 16:28.02, breaking a 22-year-old school record.
