George Mason head golf coach Scott King
has announced the addition of four incoming student-athletes to the 2011-12
roster. The
four-member recruiting class consists of Andrew Brenneman (Loudoun County High
School's Raiders, Leesburg, Va.), Kevin Yerks (Broad Run High School's Spartans,
Ashburn, Va.), Christian Bech (Rungsted Gymnasium, Horsholm, Denmark), and Clay
O'Connor (Lord Botetourt High School, Troutville, Va.).
"After our highest finish ever in the 2011 CAA
Championships (3rd), and a huge turnover in our roster, I wasn't sure what to
expect when we tee it up again in the fall," said King. "But I
believe the new additions to the team will make an immediate impact and
hopefully we can pick up from where we left off in April."
Brenneman, a
native of Virginia, lettered all four years at Loudoun County High School.
Among his many accolades, Brenneman was named Velocity Sports Performance
Athlete of the Month and received the Coach's award. He placed 7th
in the American Junior Golf Association Tournament and led his school to the
Virginia State High School Championship three times. Brenneman expects to major
in Business.
Yerks
lettered all four years in golf as the team Captain at Broad Run High School in
Ashbury, Virginia. He attended Johnson & Wales on a golf scholarship and
transferred to junior college before finally transferring to Mason. In his golf
career, Yerks has worked with swing coach Pat McGuire of Raspberry Golf Academy
for 10 years as well as had two hole-in-ones. He plans on studying Economics
and Entrepreneurship.
Bech, who
hails from Horsholm, Denmark, has competed in numerous international
competitions. His winnings include finishing 4th in the 2009 Titleist
Trophy shooting; winning a silver medal in the 2009 Austrian Amateur
Championship with current European PGA Tour player, Andreas Hartoe and former
All-American from Oregon State University, Morten Madsen. Bech was the top
Danish player through the first two rounds in the 2010 German International
Amateur Championship and finished 25th in the 2009 Turkish
International Amateur Championship. He was also a part of the Kokkedal Golf
Club that won the 2008 National Championship and competed in several
international events such as Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in London,
England. Bech is a transfer student from Bluefield college.
O'Connor was a four-yr letter winner at Lord Botetourt High School near his hometown
of Troutville, Va. His many accolades include being named Timesland Player of
the Year, the Blue Ridge District Player of the Year for both 2008-09 and
2009-10 seasons, and also received the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame
Certificate of Merit. Continuing his golf career, O'Connor will be competing in
multiple tournaments this summer.
"I believe all four incoming players will have
the opportunity to contribute right away and we will get ourselves back in
position to claim the CAA Championship in the spring," added King.
