Lavell Handy, a junior track and field athlete, and Mandissa
Marshall, a sophomore track and field athlete, each posted terrific
performances in May and June, and for their accomplishments on the track, they
were named George Mason Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Month,
respectively.
Handy, a native of Hampton, Va., was named Second-Team
All-America, the CAA Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Year and the
Outstanding Field Performer at the CAA Meet. At the CAA Championships in early
May, he won the 110-meter hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump and his
marks in both the hurdles and long jump were among the top 10 in school
history. At the IC4A Championships, he won the triple jump title with the
fifth-best jump in school history. At the NCAA Championships, he finished 12th
in the triple jump.
Marshall, a native of Mountain Top, Pa., was named Honorable
Mention All-America in the pole vault. She tied for first place at the NCAA
East Preliminary Round, tying her own school record with a mark of 4.00 meters
and she won the CAA title with a height of 3.98 meters.
This was the first Mason Student-Athlete of the Month award
for both Handy and Marshall.
