David Verburg and the men's 4X100-meter relay team competed
at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Wednesday night and both competed
well but neither was able to advance beyond the preliminary round.
Verburg, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Va., ran the 400-meters
in 46.15 seconds, the 10th fastest time in school history. He
finished 18th overall and did not advance to Friday's final. There were
24 competitors and only eight advanced to the finals. The top two finishers in
each of the three heats advanced automatically, followed by the next two
fastest times. The fastest time that did not advance was Errol Nolan of Houston
who ran a 45.30. Tony McQuay of Florida had the fastest time on the day,
running a 44.87.
The 4X100 relay team of Adrian Vaughn, Rachaunn Ruffin,
Ja-Vell Bullard and Nick Vaughn finished 20th in the event with a
time of 40.48. As with the 400 meters, there were 24 teams competing and only
eight advanced to Saturday's finals. The final qualifying spot went to Texas
which ran a 39.23. Texas A&M set a stadium record with a time of 38.38 to
win the prelims.
On Thursday, the men's 4X400-meter relay team will compete
at 9:20 p.m. EDT. Last year the 4X400 team was named Honorable Mention
All-American and the squad earned All-American status at the past two Indoor
Championships.
