OCCOQUAN, Va. - George
Mason's varsity four led the Patriots in the George Trophy Sunday morning on
the Occoquan Reservoir. Georgetown captured the 1st Annual George
Trophy with 17.5 total points and also took the Class of 1998 Cup raced between
the Hoyas and George Washington.
The inaugural event started with the Third Varsity Eight and
Second Varsity Four races. Georgetown crossed the finish line first in both
races before the Varsity Four took to the water. Again, the Hoyas finished
first crossing in 7:59.1 followed by Mason in 8:08.0. George Washington took
third in the race with a time of 8:23.1.
The three teams raced in the Second Varsity Eight next as
George Washington pulled out in front in 7:12.7. The Hoyas claimed second in
7:19.4, while Mason capped the race in 7:36.9. The Varsity Eight race closed
the morning as Georgetown took the final race of the day. The Hoyas crossed in
7:06.3 followed by George Washington in 7:11.0. In the closest race of the
morning, Mason narrowly came in third behind the Colonials in 7:12.4.
Georgetown took the George Trophy with 17.5 points. George
Washington came in second with 13.5 and Mason took third with eight team
points.
Mason closes out its season at the Dad Vail Regatta next
weekend, May 13-14.
