Fairfax, Va. - The George Mason
softball team completed their season with a sweep of UNC-Wilmington Saturday. They won
5-2 on Senior Day in which Stephanie Strother was honored as Mason's only senior. The win put Mason's season record
at 19-25 overall and 8-12 in the CAA. Mason finishes tied for fifth place in the CAA for the second time in as many years with James Madison.
UNC-Wilmington dropped to 11-45 overall and 3-18 in the CAA.
The
Patriots took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Tiffany Webb led off with a single that
extended her hitting streak to 11 games, but was thrown out trying to steal
second. Megan Blank followed with a
single and Tori Dudley was hit by a pitch. Blank scored off of a single by Emily Lafferty
and the bases were loaded after Kaila Conlon drew a walk. Rachael Davies continued the inning with a
walk that brought Dudley home from third and Katie Rynex brought another run
home when she grounded out to second base.
The
Seahawks got one back in the second inning with the help of two singles and an
error.
Megan
Blank added another run to Mason's lead in the second, bringing the score to
4-1, when she hit a two-out RBI single to bring home Lauren McColgan who
singled earlier in the inning.
After
two scoreless innings against the Seahawks, Mason once again added a run in the
fifth inning to lead 5-1. Rachael Davies
hit a two-out RBI single that brought Lafferty home from second.
UNC-Wilmington
attempted a comeback in the seventh inning scoring a run off of a hit and an
error but were unable to do any more damage, losing 2-5.
Kelsey
Byrd picked up the win today, pitching four innings, allowing three hits, and an
earned run. It was her seventh win of
the year, which tied her with Stephanie Maher with the most on the staff. Miranda Cranford came in to pitch two innings
striking out a batter and Maher pitching the final inning allowing a hit and an
unearned run.
Lauren
McColgan finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and Rachael Davies was
1-for-2 with two RBI. Tori Dudley
contributed with a 1-for-1 performance recording an RBI, a stolen base, a walk
and a run scored. Tiffany Webb finished
the game 1-for-3 which left her with an 11 game hitting streak to end the
season. Emily Lafferty was 1-for-2 with
an RBI, a walk and two runs scored.
