Fairfax, Va. - The George Mason
softball team squared off against the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks Friday taking
both games on the day. They won the
first game 6-3 and the second by a score of 5-0. The Patriots improved to 18-25 overall and
7-12 in the CAA as the Seahawks dropped to 11-44 overall and 3-17 in the CAA on
the year.
The
Patriots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one after
Emily Lafferty came through with a two-out RBI single that scored Tiffany Webb,
who reached base with a single up the middle to begin the inning.
The
Seahawks busted out for three runs in the top of the third inning to lead Mason
3-1.
Not
much offense took place until Mason finally broke through with five runs in the
sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead in the game.
Tori Dudley started the inning
with a single and Lafferty hit a triple to right center to bring Dudley
home. Kaila Conlon tied the game when
she hit a sacrifice fly deep into the gap of right-center field that scored
Lafferty from third. Rachael Davies
followed with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch ultimately scoring
after Reagan Doiron hit an RBI single to right field. Doiron moved to second with two outs when
Lauren McColgan was hit by a pitch and scored off of a Tiffany Webb
double. McColgan was brought home when
Megan Blank singled to shortstop.
The
6-3 lead was good enough as Kelsey Byrd retired the Seahawks down in order in
the seventh to win the game.
Byrd
pitched a complete game allowing six hits, three earned runs and struck out
three batters picking up her sixth win of the year.
Tiffany
Webb was huge in helping the Patriots pick up the win in game one as she batted
3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored. Emily Lafferty was 2-for-3 with a triple, two
RBI and a run scored. Rachael Davies
finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Megan Blank and Reagan Doiron each recorded a
single and a RBI in the game.
The
Patriots escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inning of the second game and
then took a 4-0 lead in the second. After
two outs in the inning Reagan Doiron and Katie Rynex hit back-to-back singles
and Doiron scored off of a wild pitch.
Lauren McColgan followed with a walk and Tiffany Webb singled to left to
load the bases. Megan Blank doubled to
right field scoring two and Tori Dudley singled to right to bring Webb
home.
Mason
added one in the third inning when Rynex singled home a run to raise their lead
to 5-0. This lead was big enough as the
Patriots held the shutout and won both games as well as the series with still a
game left to play.
Miranda
Cranford started game two pitching five innings, allowing eight hits, and a
walk while striking out one. Stephanie
Maher pitched the final two innings, walking two.
Webb
continued her torrid stretch finishing the second game 2-for-4 with a run
scored and was 5-for-8 on the day raising her hit streak to ten games. Rynex was 2-for3 in the game with an RBI and
a run scored and Blank was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Dudley finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI
and Doiron was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
