George Mason junior Lavell Handy
and sophomore Mandissa
Marshall each won events at the Penn Relays last weekend and on Tuesday, they
were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association as they were named the Male
and Female Track Athletes of the Week. Handy shared the award with William &
Mary's Brandon Heroux and Delaware's Jim Schwendtner while Marshall split the award with James Madison's Marissa
McDonald.
Handy won the long jump at the Penn Relays when he leapt
7.57 meters. It's the top jump in the event by any CAA athlete this season and
it was a personal best, giving him one of the top 10 jumps in Mason school
history. Handy is currently tied for 33rd
in the nation in the
event.
Marshall set a new Mason school record when she cleared 4.00
meters in the pole vault. She is just the second CAA athlete to clear 4.00
meters this year and she is among the top 50 in the nation in the event.
The Patriots will compete at the CAA Championships this
weekend and the IC4A/ECAC Championships the following weekend. After a week
off, they will then compete at the NCAA East Regional where eligible athletes
will compete for a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships.
