Charlottesville, Va.--
The George Mason women's tennis team concluded its weekend road trip with a loss at James Madison today as the undermanned Patriots fell 1-6 to the Dukes. The shorthanded Patriots again played without Brooke Blackwell
and Yasmin Fotovat
in singles play due to injuries.
"We played hard today, but it just wasn't meant to be," remarked Coach Stephen Curtis
following the match. "When you're not 100% it's tough, but my players showed Mason pride by continuing to battle," he added. "I'm very proud of each of them."
Madison openned by taking all three doubles to earn the first point. They moved ahead 2-0 when Kate Desiatnikova lost to Katherine Bulling. The Dukes quickly went up 3-0 when Kiersten Pappas
was pulled from her match early in the second set due to a lingering injury. When Stephanie Longuiera lost at the number six spot, the match was secured for Madison. Alison Wingo
then lost at the number three position.
The last two Mason players on court continued to fight. Senior captain Lindsay Gray
was resilient and gutted out a tough victory over Michelle Nguyen 7-6 (8), 6-4 at the number two spot. Freshman Ashley Delaney
fell short in her match with Megan Douglas 3-6, 7-5, 6-10.
Mason falls to 16-11 on the year. The Patriots again go on the road on Wednesday as they travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola. Both the Men's & Women's Teams are home on Thursday as they host Morgan State. The men are scheduled to start at 1:30 with the women to follow starting at 3 pm.
