OCCOQUAN, Va. - The morning opened with Mason's novice eight finishing first in its preliminary race to advance to the finals of Sunday's Occoquan Sprints contested on the Occoquan Reservoir. Strong showings continued for the Patriots as Mason's junior varsity eight and varsity eight boats both earned final berths after advancing out of their preliminary heats.

Competition started with the novice eight boats racing in two heats. Mason, competing in heat B, edged out five other teams crossing the finish line first in 8:41.00. Georgetown placed second in 8:47.04. With the berth into the final, the Patriots finished second behind Dayton with a mark of 7:57.93. Dayton crossed in 7:51.50.

Racing next were the junior varsity eights with Dayton claiming the top spot in 8:23.40 and Mason coming in second in 8:27.85. With the second-place finish, the Patriots advanced to the finals where they finished second behind Saint Joseph's. The Hawks crossed in 7:25.70, followed by Mason in 7:44.80.

In the varsity eight race, Mason finished first in heat C in a time of 7:48.80, beating Temple, Mary Washington and William & Mary. In the final, the Patriots placed fourth in 7:27.27. Rounding out competition for Mason was the novice four which finished third in 9:21.00.
