Washington, D.C.--
The George Mason softball team combined to score five runs in the fourth and fifth innings, paving the way to a 6-4 victory against Beltway foe George Washington Wednesday afternoon.
Kaila Conlon
led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, along with Emily Lafferty
, who 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Patriots generated a two-out rally to open their scoring in the fourth. After Lauren McColgan
and Megan Blank
were retired to lead off the inning, Lafferty drew a walk. Conlon then doubled, scoring Lafferty. Rachael Davies
singled to center bringing home Conlon and giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, after a strikeout, Tiffany Webb
reached on a bunt single. McColgan then reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Webb to second. Megan Blank
then grounded out to second, but it was a productive out moving both Webb and McColgan up. Lafferty then came up and singled, scoring Webb. Conlan delivered with a triple down the right field line, clearing the bases and extending Mason's lead to 5-1. Mason tacked on one more run in the seventh, as Lafferty hit a SAC fly, scoring Webb.
Miranda Cranford
earned the win for the Patriots, her fourth of the season. Cranford went four innings, allowing four hits, an earned run, walking one, and striking out two. Stephanie Maher
came on in relief, tossing three innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, and walking one.
The Colonials threatened in the sixth, getting back two runs. With runners on first and second however, Maher was able to get out of the jam and threw a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the win.
The Patriots improve to 15-24 overall on the season while the Colonials fall to 14-25-1. The Patriots will now prepare for a pivotal CAA weekend series at Georgia State on Saturday and Sunday.
