The George Mason
softball team defeated Drexel by a score of 6-2 in one game today. The second game was rained out and will be played tomorrow. Mason's
overall record rose to 13-22 and 3-9 in the CAA and Drexel dropped to 12-23 and
4-9 in the CAA.
Mason
got into a jam in the first inning but Kelsey Byrd
was able to escape allowing
only one run and leaving the bases loaded.
Drexel still took the 1-0 lead after the first.
The
Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the first after Tiffany Webb
led off
the inning with a single up the middle later advancing to second on an illegal
pitch and to third on a wild pitch. She
scored from third when Emily Lafferty
hit an RBI single up the middle.
Not
much offense happened in innings two through four but in the top of the fifth
Drexel retook a 2-1 lead. Mason answered
back with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth and used two errors in
the bottom of the sixth to score three more to lead 6-2. They shut down the Dragons in the seventh and
won the game.
Kelsey
Byrd pitched a complete game giving up seven hits, two earned runs, and a walk
while striking out three batters to earn her fourth win of the season.
Tiffany
Webb finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Emily Lafferty
was 1-for-2 with two RBI and
Katie Rynex
finished the game 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Lauren McColgan
recorded one hit in two at
bats and also scored a run.
The
Patriots will play Drexel again Saturday in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
