The George Mason
softball team lost both its games Sunday against Towson in a CAA battle. The Patriots suffered a 13-0 five-inning
mercy rule defeat in the first game and lost the second by a score of 3-2. These loses dropped their overall record to
12-22 and their conference record to 2-9.
Towson improved to 18-20 overall and 6-5 in the CAA.
The
first game did not start off well for Mason as they gave up 13 runs in five
innings. Towson jumped off to a 5-0 lead
in the second inning hitting two home runs in the inning. They added eight more in the third inning off
of six hits and two more homers. The Patriots
weren't able to score any runs and the mercy rule came into effect after the
fifth.
Towson's
Sammi DiPomo had two homers in the game to go along with six RBI. Those numbers tied a school record for most
in a single game.
The
Patriots loaded the bases in the first inning but were unable to score as Katie
Lingmai got out of the inning and finished the game giving up just one hit and
three walks. She also struck out five
batters and picked up her 11th
win of the season.
Stephanie
Maher got the start for Mason lasting 1.2 innings, giving up three hits, five
earned runs and a walk. Miranda Cranford
pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing six hits, eight earned runs and a
walk. Maher was tagged with her third
loss of the year.
Kaila
Conlon recorded Mason's only hit in game one.
Conlon, Emily Lafferty
, and Tori Dudley
each got on base through a
walk.
The
second game was a lot closer but Mason lost the game 3-2.
Towson
scored two runs in the first inning. A
single and a home run were the first two plays of the game for the Tigers. The home run was again by DiPompo which was
her third of the day.
The
Patriots scored one in the fourth and one in the top of the sixth to tie the
game but gave up the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. They were unable to score in the seventh and
lost by a run.
Lafferty
had the only extra base hit for Mason and finished the game 1-for-2 with a double,
a walk and two runs scored. Rachael
Davies was 1-for-3 and had both of the Patriots RBI. Megan Blank
, Tiffany Webb
, Tori Dudley
and
Stephanie Strother
all had one single each.
Kelsey
Byrd pitched the entire game for Mason giving up six hits, three earned runs
and two walks over six innings. She
received her 9th
loss of the season.
Mason
will play again on Wednesday, April 20 when they travel to Mount Saint Mary's
for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
