FAIRFAX, Va. -
George
Mason kept visiting No. 11 Virginia to two goals in the first half as both
teams stood at an even 2-2 tally after the first 30 minutes, but 12 second-half
goals from the Cavaliers broke the tie and sealed the win Wednesday night at
George Mason Stadium.

, Emily Ellisen
and Allie Hilderbrandt
each
led Mason (3-10) with two goals apiece, while junior Mary Schwartz
added a
goal. Jamison and Ellisen each contributed an assist to finish with three
points apiece. In addition, Caitlin Formato
and Katie Mascolo
recorded assists
on the night.
Chelsea Gamble
recorded three of Mason's 10 draw controls,
while goalkeeper Brittany Pastrana
recorded three ground balls. Schwartz was
credited with two caused turnovers.
For Virginia (9-5), Josie Owen paced the offense with five
scores, followed by Julie Gardner with three goals and an assist.
Ellisen opened the scoring with a goal just over two minutes
into the game on an unassisted shot. Owen, however, put the Cavaliers in the
lead 2-1 with consecutive goals over 15 minutes later. Jamison scored her first
goal of the evening at the 5:50 mark to send the teams into halftime tied at
2-2. The two goals for Virginia marked the lowest output in a half this season
by the Cavaliers.
Virginia took its final advantage immediately firing in the
second half after winning the opening draw as Gardner scored at 29:39, before
Annie Thomas converted a free position attempt for a 4-2 Cavalier lead.
Schwartz brought the Patriots back to within one off a Jamison pass, but Owen
tacked on another two goals for Virginia to follow for a 6-3 advantage.
Ellisen scored for the second time at 19:52 before Virginia used
a 6-0 run to take a commanding 12-4 lead with 7:23 left to play. Jamison broke
the run with an unassisted goal at 5:43, but Virginia added its final two tallies
of the night to take a 14-5 lead with 4:26 remaining in the game. Hilderbrandt
scored the final two goals for Mason, both assisted, to account for the final
14-7 tally.
Virginia outshot Mason 30-19 and limited the Patriots to
eight shots in the second half. Pastrana recorded eight saves in the contest
with six coming in the first half. Pastrana played 57:33 between the pipes with
Katie Teague
playing 2:27 minutes of action. Cavalier goalkeeper Kim Kolarik
recorded six saves in 55:04 of action in cage.
Mason returns to George Mason Stadium on Friday, April 15 to
welcome Delaware in a 7 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association matchup. The conference
matchup is also the Game of the Week where Mason students with a valid Mason
University ID will receive a free freezer mug, while supplies last.
