After a strong performance this past
week, freshman midfielder Anna Kopecka
has been recognized by the Colonial
Athletic Association earning Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending
March 21.
George Mason split games this week at New
Hampshire and Columbia.
The Prague, Czech
Republic, native posted four goals, including the
double overtime game-winner at Columbia,
five draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
"We are very proud of how Anna has played this season,"
noted head coach Lauren Rywak
. "She has had a seamless transition to the collegiate
level of lacrosse and we are anticipating a great career for her here at Mason."
At New Hampshire, the
freshman scored once for the Patriots, but it was at Columbia that Kopecka led Mason to victory. In
the final period of regulation, the Patriots trailed by a two-goal deficit and
with 2:16 left to play, Kopecka scored unassisted to cut the deficit to one.
Teammate Caitlin Formato
knotted the score 63 seconds later as the pair forced
overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the teams entered a sudden-victory
situation and in the game's 68th
minute, Kopecka scored off an
assist from Chelsea Gamble
to seal the team's 14-13 double overtime victory. In
the game, Kopecka tallied three goals on six shots, three ground balls, two draw
controls and two caused turnovers.
