The George Mason baseball team trailed Mount St.
Mary's twice on Wednesday afternoon, but both times the Patriots responded
immediately with runs to retake the lead as Mason extended its winning streak
to seven games, beating The Mount, 9-5 at Spuhler Field. The game had
originally been scheduled for Tuesday in Emmitsburg, Md., but was changed due
to field conditions.
Nick Allen
and Jake Leonardo
each had two hits,
Jeremy Haas
had three RBI and Blaise Fernandez
had two RBI.
After putting two on with one out and failing to
score in the first, the Patriots were able to get a run across in the second as
Nick Allen
tripled and came home on Blaise Fernandez
' sacrifice bunt. The Mountaineers
responded in the third by taking the lead. With one out, Tommy Flynn tripled
and after Michael Foster walked, Andrew Caron singled to make it 1-1. Foster
went to third on the play and scored on a Kyle Kane sacrifice fly.
The Patriots struck quickly in retaking the lead.
Zack Helgeson
walked to lead off the third, Shane Davis
followed with a double
to deep left and Jeremy Haas
followed with his first home run of the year, a
shot to left that made it 4-2.
Against reliever Sean Cabrera
, The Mount was able to
take back the lead in the fifth as Flynn walked, Foster singled and Caron
homered to make it 5-4. Once again the Patriots responded immediately, but this
time, they took advantage of a huge two-out error. Nick Allen
singled with one
out, went to second when Jake Leonardo
walked and took third on a wild pitch.
Blaise Fernandez
tried to bring him home with a sacrifice but Allen was thrown
out at home. That's when the wheels came off for The Mount. Chris Cook
reached
on a fielding error by second baseman Tony Quaranta, loading the bases, and
Brig Tison
's slow roller back to the mound caused a rushed throw by reliever
Andrew Schrock. His toss went into right field and three runs came home on the
play.
The Patriots added to the lead in the bottom of the
seventh when Allen was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took
third on a Leonardo infield single and scored on a Fernandez sacrifice fly.
After Chris Cook
doubled to put runners on second and third, Tison singled to
make it 9-5.
The Patriots will take the field this weekend with a
three-game series against Niagara. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m.
