Fairfax, Va. -
In day three of
the Mason Invitational George Mason continued their extra inning magic winning
against Binghamton 5-4 in nine innings.
That was Binghamton's only loss as they finished the weekend with a record of 4-1. Mason lost their earlier game against Bucknell by a score of 3-1. After the conclusion of the tournament, Mason's
record sits at 7-6.
In
Mason's first game of the day they were held to just one run against Bucknell's
former rookie of the year pitcher, sophomore Alex MacLean. MacLean pitched a complete game giving up
four hits, one run, and one walk while striking out six. Her only blemish came in the bottom of the
seventh inning when Reagan Doiron
hit a deep home run to left field. It was her second home run of the year.
Megan
Blank contributed to half of the Patriots hits, going 2-for-2 and Lauren
McColgan made up the other hit as she finished the game 1-for-3.
Miranda
Cranford struggled in her start but managed to pitch her way out of a lot of
jams. She finished the game pitching
five innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs and also struck out
four batters. Stephanie Maher
pitched
the final two innings allowing just two hits and striking out a batter.
In
the second game Mason looked like they would be able to take an early lead
loading the bases with one out in the first inning, however they were unable to
push across any runs. Binghamton scored
a run in the first, third and fourth innings.
Down
3-0 the Patriots rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Doiron started the inning with an infield
single to the shortstop. Rachael Davies
reached first on a fielder's choice with Doiron out at second. A ground out by Rynex moved Davies into
scoring position and was pinch run for by Brooke Tickle
. After a walk from Emily Lafferty
, Megan Blank
blasted a two-run triple to deep right center.
Blank also scored when Stephanie Strother
singled to third base before
Tiffany Webb
ended the inning with a strikeout.
Binghamton
took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth before Mason tied the score again in
the seventh. Lauren McColgan
started the
seventh with a single up the middle and advanced to third after a bunt single
by Alyssa See
. After a strikeout from
Doiron, Davies singled home a run with a ball up the middle. An intentional walk of Rynex loaded the bases
but Binghamton pitcher, Kate Price, was able to strike out Lafferty and force
Blank to ground out to end the inning.
The
Patriots took a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning starting with a single
from Davies. She advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt from Rynex and scored on an RBI single from Lafferty. That run would prove to be enough as
Stephanie Maher
would close to door on any potential comebacks in the bottom of
the ninth.
Lafferty,
McColgan and Davies each had two hits for Mason. Lafferty and Davies recorded an RBI each,
while Blank contributed with two RBI's.
Stephanie Strother
also had an RBI in the game.
Starter,
Kelsey Byrd
, only lasted four innings giving up eight hits, and three runs (all
earned) and also struck out a batter.
Stephanie Maher
finished the game pitching five innings of two-hit ball allowing
just one run and three hits while striking out three.
Maher
won her second game in two days and is now 3-0 on the year. She finished the tournament with a 2-0
record, pitching 11.0 innings, giving up eight hits, one run, and three walks
and struck out seven batters.
Mason
will play again Wednesday, March 16 when they travel to play UMBC. That game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
