The George Mason
softball team split their games in the second day of the Mason Invitational
losing to Binghamton 3-2 and defeating Cornell 7-6 in a walk-off win in the
ninth inning.
Rachael Davies
contributed
to four of Mason's eight total RBI's going 4-for-9 with a double and a run
scored. The Patriots record moved to 6-5
on the year.
In
Mason's first game of the day, they found themselves on the wrong end of a
pitching duel losing 3-2 to Binghamton.
The Bearcats starting pitcher, Kristin Emerling, pitched a complete game
giving up six hits, two earned runs, and three walks and also struck out five
batters. The Patriot's scored both runs
off the bat of
Rachael Davies
when she hit a two run single in the fifth. She finished the game with a 1-for-4
showing.
Alyssa See
also put up a solid
game going 2-for-3 with a walk.
Miranda
Cranford kept the game close pitching five innings while allowing four hits,
three runs (all earned), three walks and striking out four batters.
Stephanie Maher
would replace her in the
sixth, pitching two shutout innings of one hit ball. She also struck out two batters.
In
the second game the Patriots took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning against
Cornell. After a strike out,
Alyssa See
walked and advanced to second on a ground out from
Tori Dudley
.
Rachael Davies
followed with a single through
the right side that would score See.
Lauren
McColgan would bring the score to 2-0 with an RBI single in the second inning
but Cornell answered with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Down 4-2 in the fifth, Tiffany Webb
started
the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice from McColgan. See struck out next but the Patriots would
rally for four runs with two outs. Dudley
started the action by bringing home Webb on an RBI double down the left field
line. She scored off of an RBI single
from Davies and
Katie Rynex
followed with an RBI double to left center. Another run was added when Christina Villalon
misjudged a fly ball from
Reagan Doiron
allowing Rynex to score on the
error.
Up
6-4 in the seventh inning Mason allowed Cornell to tie the game, with the game-tying
run coming with two outs and two strikes, sending the teams to extra
innings. In the bottom of the ninth
McColgan started with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
See. Dudley was intentionally walked and
Davies fouled out to third base. With
two outs and the game tied 6-6,
Katie Rynex
stepped to the plate and clubbed a
walk-off RBI double to right field scoring McColgan.
Freshman
Kelsey Byrd
got the start for Mason in this game and pitched seven innings
allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned), three walks and striking out
two.
Stephanie Maher
came in for her in
relief allowing three hits over two innings and picked up the win. She is now 2-0 on the season. Ali Tomlinson received the loss for Cornell
after pitching the final 4.2 innings.
The
final day of the Mason Invitational will resume tomorrow with the first game
starting at 9 am between Cornell and Bucknell.
Mason's first game is at 1:30 pm when they square off against Bucknell
and they will play again against Binghamton at 3:45 pm.
