Ashley Danner, a junior swimmer, and Cam Long, a senior men's
basketball player, each had excellent performances during the month of January
and for their accomplishments, they were named George Mason Female and Male
Athletes of the Month.
Danner, a native of Springfield and a graduate of Lake Braddock
High School, swam in 11 events in the month of January. She won nine of those
events and had a second-place finish and a fifth-place finish as well. She was
honored as a CAA Swimmer of the Week on January 18 after picking up first place
against Towson in the 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard
freestyle as well as in the 200-yard medley relay. The swimming and diving team
hosts the CAA Championships beginning February 24.
Long, who was Male Athlete of the Month for the second-straight
month, led the men's basketball team to an 8-2 record in the month of January
and along the way, he was recognized by the CAA as its Player of the week on
January 24. In the month, The Palm Bay, Fla., native averaged 18 points, 4.2
rebounds and three assists per game including a career-high 30-point
performance at James Madison. He also eclipsed the 20-point plateau five times
during January as the Patriots closed the month on a six-game winning streak.
For Danner, this is the sixth time winning the award. She has won
it twice during every season in which she's swam at Mason. For Long, it's the
fourth time he's won the award and he becomes the first male athlete to win the
award in back-to-back months. Danner is the only woman to win the award in
back-to-back months having done so last season.
