Battling
gusting winds, the George Mason lacrosse team dropped a 19-9 decision to Johns
Hopkins Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. Emily Ellisen
and Anna Kopecka
led the Patriots with three goals apiece. Mason dips to 0-2 on the year, while
Johns Hopkins opened its season 1-0.
Mason scattered four goals amongst three players in the
first half, but Johns Hopkins quickly took control of the game scoring three
unanswered goals before Kopecka put Mason on the board at 25:24. Chelsea
Gamble was credited with the assist. After JHU responded with the next four
goals to take a 7-1 advantage, the Patriots answered with a pair of unassisted
goals from Madalyn Jamison
and Julianne Tela
, cutting the score to 7-3. Kopecka
scored her second goal of the half from Ellisen with 1:41 remaining in
the half as the Blue Jays tacked on two more for a 12-4 halftime lead.
The Patriots scored five goals in the second half, but could
not overcome Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays added seven to the scoreboard for the
final 19-9 score.
Ellisen led the Patriots with four points on three goals and
an assist. Kopecka finished with three goals, while Jamison added two. For the
Blue Jays, Taylor D'Amore chipped in five goals and Colleen McCaffrey picked up
three assists and two goals.
Brittany Pastrana
played all 60 minutes in goal with 10
saves, including six in the second half.
George Mason returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 26 at
Virginia Tech. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
