BALTIMORE, Md . - Sophomore Caitlin Formato opened the 2011 season scoring three goals as George Mason fell to UMBC 19-7 at UMBC Stadium Friday night. The contest marked the season opener for both teams.

Mason struck first with a goal on a free position shot from Allie Hilderbrandt , but UMBC tied the score at 1-all less than two minutes later on a goal from Emily Coady that sparked an 11-0 Retriever run. Mason regrouped and ended the period on a 2-1 run with two goals from Formato, who converted two free position attempts. With 8:32 remaining, Formato found the back of the cage for her first goal of the contest and did so again with 2:26 remaining in the half. UMBC managed another goal to close out the period making the halftime score 12-3.

UMBC scored early in the second half before Mason answered scoring three of the next four goals from Emily Ellisen and Chelsea Gamble , cutting the deficit to eight, 14-6, with 18:21 remaining. The Retrievers, however, outscored Mason 5-1 over the final 12:06 with Mason's last point coming at 11:19 from Formato as UMBC tallied four thereafter for the final 19-7 tally.

Formato led the Patriots in goals with three, followed by Ellisen with two. Gamble led Mason in caused turnovers (3), while Caitlin Hoffen led in ground balls (3). Sophomore Brittany Pastrana got the start in cage, finishing with seven saves in 60 minutes.

George Mason returns to the field on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Johns Hopkins. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
