After a 2-2 start in dual matches this season, the wrestling
team will compete in their first home dual of the season against an American
University team that has been ranked as high as seventh in the nation this
season.
"I think this is a great opportunity for our team," said
Head Coach Joe Russell. "A lot of the
things that we are trying to do here at Mason have been modeled after what
American has done with their program over the last decade. They have turned their program into one of
the top wrestling schools in the country by placing 5th in the
nation last year. Having them on our
home schedule is important for us because they can develop in to a rival down
the road due to our location."
Mason is looking build off the momentum of their two dual victories
last weekend in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania against East Stroudsburg University
and Sacred Heart University. With tons
of alumni and fans expected Saturday night, Russell is expecting the match to
be one of the biggest all year for his team.
"Our coaching staff and team are definitely excited to finally
get to wrestle at home," said Russell. "We're
trying to change some things up and do some big things at Mason on and off the
mat."
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm in the Recreation
and Athletic Complex. Pizza will be provided
for the first 100 Mason students who attend and there will be an intermission
ceremony recognizing Mason wrestling alumni who are able to attend the match.
