Swimming and diving will take on University of Toronto and
University of Richmond in their second straight home swim meet of the season
on Friday night. Mason is coming off a
dominating victory from the men and a tough defeat for the women against
conference rival University of Delaware two weeks ago.
The men were led last week by senior Derrick Butts and
sophomore Fernando Rubio who both earned CAA Male Diver of the Week and CAA
Male Swimmer of the week respectively.
Butts broke three records (two Mason records and one pool record) with
his 1-meter dive score of 373.05 and his 3-meter dive score of 395.17. Rubio won three individual events and was a
part of Mason's victorious 200 medley relay team. The sophomore won 1000-yard freestyle in
9:42.48, the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.65 and the 200-yard
individual medley at 1:35.48.
The women will be led on Friday by senior Ashley Danner, who
won three individual events in her first meet of the season two weeks ago
against Delaware. Danner was victorious
in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.67, the 200-yard breaststroke
in 2:17.35 and the 200-yard IM with her time of 2:06.25. Freshman standout Julianne Phillips also took
home three victories in the meet against Delaware in the 200-yard freestyle
with her time of 1:54.75, the 100-yard freestyle in 53.88 and the 500-yard
freestyle, finishing the race in 5:06.69.
After facing Delaware two weeks ago, the Patriots will use
this meet to prepare for the CAA POD Meet next weekend, which will be hosted at
home. Mason, Toronto and Richmond will
face off in 32 total events, beginning with 200 medley relay and concluding
with the 400 yard freestyle relay. The
meet will begin at 6pm Friday night at the Jim McKay Natatorium in the Aquatic
Center.
