POWELLS POINT, NC--The Mason Golf team is in 13th place after the first round of the second annual ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate. The Patriots are one stroke behind Longwood and four strokes off CAA foes William and Mary and Delaware going into the second round of the three-round tournament.
The University of Georgia, last year's NCAA National runners-up is 17-under par after
firing a 271 to lead by 10 strokes after the first round. The Bulldogs
have three players in the top 10.
Kevin Yerks shot an even-par 72 to lead the Patriots and is tied for 15th overall. Senior Josh Apple and junior Casey Thompson finished with three-over par 75s for the Patriots.
T.J. Mitchell shot a tournament first round best 64, while
Bulldog teammate Keith Mitchell shot 65 at the par
72, 6535 yard Kilmarlic golf course. Liberty is in second place led by
Robert karlsson who shot 65 and the University
of Maryland is third at 288. T.J. Mitchell's 64 bested the 65 shot last
year by Harold Varner of East Carolina who was the tournament medalist.
