Swimming & Diving: Men Win and Women Fall at Delaware

Men Dominate as Women Fall in Nail Biter to Delaware

Men's swimming beat the University of Delaware in their first home swim meet of the year by a score of 185-115.  The women, who were competing in their first meet of the season, lost in a nail biter by a score of 143-145. 

Once again, Mason was led by senior diver Derrick Butts who set a school record in the 1 meter dive with a score of 373.05.  Butts also won the men's 3-meter dive with a score of 395.17.

The men were also led by sophomore Fernando Rubio who won three events (the 1000 yard freestyle - 9:42.48, 200 yard breaststroke - 2:08.65 and the 200 yard IM - 1:54.75), also swam the third leg on Mason's 200-yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:35.48.

Mason's men combined to win eight more events in the meet to complete their dominating performance.  Senior Preston Wolter won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.32 and the 500-yard freestyle in 47.15.  Junior David Kiss also won two events on the day, coming away with victories in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.39) and the 100-yard butterfly (50.75).  Freshman Travis Lauri (50-yard freestyle, 21.41), sophomore Joey Kelly (100-yard freestyle, 47.41) and junior Austin Witherow (100-yard backstroke, 52.71) each took home one victory on the day.  The men also closed the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:25.86.

Standout senior Ashley Danner and promising freshman Julianne Phillips each won three events to lead the women against the Blue Hens.  Danner won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.67, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.35 and the 200-yard IM with her time of 2:06.25.  Phillips took home victories in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 1:54.75, the 100-yard freestyle in 53.88 and the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the race in 5:06.69.

Senior Ali-Marie Murphy who won both the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive with scores of 216.97 and 226.26 respectively also led the Patriots women.  

Mason will compete again on October 28th at home against Toronto and Richmond.
