The George Mason men's tennis team participated in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational this past weekend. The Patriots crowned champions in three singles flights and placed second in two doubles flights for a successful weekend on the hard-court.
Mason's Taylor Sargent, Scott Keaton and Nick Barker each won their flights in singles. Sargent won the level 9 and up flight, winning three straight matches. His toughest match was in the first round against Christopher Newport's (CNU) Garett Widing taking the match 7-6, 2-6, 1-0. He won the championship match against CAA foe Jovan Milic from James Madison, 6-0, 6-3. Keaton won his three matches against Loyola's Ryan Fitzgerald, Norfolk State's (NSU) Kent Austin and in the championship match NSU's Christian Romanzini. Barker defeated two opponents from Virginia State (VSU) and Loyola's Tom Hamm en route to his top honor.
The Patriot's Steve Hyre earned a third place finish in singles level 7 and up. Jorge Osuna and Chris Borden finished in fifth place in their respective flights.
Two of the Patriots doubles team made it to the championship match but lost in the final to take second place finishes.
Keaton paired with Jimmy Davis defeated Howard's team of Warton and Chabous, 8-6, in the first round then handed Delaware's team of Vorobyov and Gelman a 9-8 loss before losing to JMU's Sentenac and Russo team 8-6 in the finals. Barker paired with Jordan Borsanyi to place 2nd in their doubles flight. The Green and Gold duo won their matches against VSU and Loyola before falling to Delaware's Derene and LeBlanc in the finals.
For the weekend Mason players went 17-8 in singles, and 7-5 in doubles. Nick Barker remains undefeated for the fall season in singles play with a record of 9-0.
