Patriots Race in Day Two of U.S. Winter National Championships

Danner, Bahr and Wolter Shine as Mason Swimming and Diving Wins 3 of 6 Matchups

Fairfax, Va. - The George Mason Patriots swimming and diving teams participated in a quad meet today winning three out of the six total matchups against Army, Old Dominion and American.  The women would record victories against American and Army with their one loss coming against Old Dominion.  The Mason men defeated American while losing to Old Dominion and Army.  Bryan Bahr broke a team record in the 1-meter dive that was just set last week by Derrick Butts.  Bahr recorded 361.3 points breaking Butt's previous record of 354.67.

Army swept the men's side and lost two of three on the women's side.  The Old Dominion women were undefeated on the day and their men won two of three.  American was swept on both sides. 

The women Patriots defeated American by a score of 235-56 and also beat Army 193-106 while losing to ODU by a score of 177-121.  Danner had another strong meet, winning every individual event she participated in.  She posted first place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.48, the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.68 and the 200-yard breaststroke recording a time of 2:15.25.  She also was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that placed second with a time of 1:46.54.  Lindsay Pierce, Anna Ratana, and Paige Impink were also part of the team.

Other strong performers included Jenny Kane who placed first in the 200-yard freestyle finishing the event in 1:54.44.  She also posted a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.23 and a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.78.  Along with Sophia Graesser, Brittany Vocke, and Anna Ratana, Kane came in second in the 400-yard freestyle relay recording a time of 3:37.41.  Impink was also another top finisher of Mason's on the women's side.  She finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.22, second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.59 and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly recording a time of 58.86. 

The Patriot men had a 222-69 victory over American but lost to ODU by a score of 173.5-126.5 and Army 194-106.  Preston Wolter was Mason's top performer finishing first in every individual event he was in.  He was the top finisher in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:58.96), the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.07), and the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.72).  He placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay along with David Kiss, Austin Witherow, and Joey Kelly where they recorded a time of 3:08.99. 

Besides his record breaking performance in the 1-meter dive, Bahr also won the 3-meter dive with a score of 347.6.  David Kiss also had a strong performance finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.14) and second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.36.  Fernando Rubio placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle (16:08.73), third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.24), and fourth in the 400-yard IM recording a time of 4:05.83.    

Mason will return to the pool next Sunday, January 30, when they travel to George Washington.  That meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
