George Mason men's tennis opened the 2010-11 season with the Mason Fall Invitational against Loyola College and Mount St. Marys at the Recreation Athletic Complex tennis courts on campus today. The Patriots have three singles and two doubles teams in the championship matches. The invitational will finish on Sunday with championship matches in Flight A, B and C singles and doubles.
Mason had three players compete in Flight A. Top singles player Jorge Osuna will play Keyon Sanai (Loyola) in the championship match tomorrow after winning matches today against Mike Zabetakis (MSM) and Matt Blake (MSM). Sophomore Kevin McMillen defeated Mike Salomon (MSM) in the first round, but lost to Sanai, 6-3, 6-3. Newcomer Jordan Borsanyi lost his first round match to Sanai and then to Salomon.
In Flight B, the Patriots sophomore Patrick Mulquin won his two matches against Dan D'Agostino (Loyola) and Pierce Norton to earn his berth into the championship match on Sunday against Conner Lisco from Loyola.
It will be an all-Mason final in Flight C as freshmen Mike Phaup and Steve Hyre both won their two matches today. Phaup defeated Phil Vavelidis (Loyola) and Ryan Fitzgerald adn Hyre defeated Andrew Marinucci (MSM) and Patrick Glaessner (Loyola). The Patriot freshmen will also team up for the doubles championship. Today the pair defeated Mostowitt/Olexa from Mount St. Marys, 8-2.
