EUGENE, Ore. - The George Mason track and field team had one more chance to compete for a national championship on Thursday, and the Patriots' men's 4x400-meter relay narrowly missed out on a spot in Saturday's finals as they finished 10th in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field.
Racing in the third and final heat, the squad consisting of David Verburg, Nick Vaughn, Ja-Vell Bullard and George Empty crossed the finish line in 3:07.07, good for fifth in the heat. The time ranked 10th among the 24 entrants, with Baylor claiming the last finals berth with a time of 3:06.65.
After Tiara Swindell's performance in the women's 400-meter dash semifinals on Wednesday, the Patriots' collegiate competition is now complete for the 2009-10 season. The NCAA Championships continue through Saturday afternoon.
