WILMINGTON, N.C. - The George Mason softball team met up with UNC Wilmington for the final game of the two teams' Colonial Athletic Association series on Sunday, but the Patriots struggled to get the offense going as the Seahawks earned a 3-0 victory at Boseman Field.
A fifth inning, three-run scoring rally by the Seahawks (10-38, 5-12 CAA) lifted them to the victory over Mason (18-24, 6-12). A leadoff double by Michelle Harrison started it for UNCW, and after Morgan Walters reached on a Mason error, the first run came home on Kelsey Edlinger's RBI single. On Laura Sykes' single through the left side, two more runs crossed the plate to make the score 3-0.
Mason, who stranded eight runners on base, had two strong scoring opportunities in the fifth and seventh innings, as both times the bases were loaded. In the seventh, there was just one out on the board when India Adams was issued a four-pitch walk to move Emily Lafferty to third and Samantha Barney to second base, but a pair of swinging strikeouts ended the game.
Amanda Aditays garnered the win with a complete game shutout, allowing just three Mason hits as she improved to 3-11. Mason starter Becky Anderson (9-7) took the loss after allowing all three runs in four and one-third innings of work. Amanda Buffington pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one walk in that span.
Mason got base hits from Barney, Lafferty and Megan Blank in the game, while Walters and Sykes were 2-for-3 to pace the Seahawks.
The Patriots will close out the 2010 regular season on Friday and Saturday with a three-game CAA set at Delaware. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader at Newark is set for 12 p.m.
