WILMINGTON, N.C. - The George Mason softball team earned a doubleheader split with the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday, falling in nine innings by a 1-0 margin before bouncing back with a 2-0 win over UNCW at Boseman Field.
The Patriots stand at 6-11 in CAA play and 18-23 overall after Saturday's games, while the Seahawks are 9-38 overall (4-12 CAA).
In game one, both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth inning. A one-out single by Katie Houmard was followed by a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt, and the bases were loaded on a Ashley Shingleton base hit. With one out still on the board, Morgan Walters drove in the game-winner on a single to left field.
The run spoiled the complete game for Mason senior Becky Anderson, who fell to 9-6 following the complete game. Samme Lisowksy (4-16) earned the win with a two-hit complete game shutout. Mason's two hits came off the bats of Katie Rynex and Kara Weiner, both singles, while Walters led the Seahawks with a 2-for-4 game.
In game two, the Patriots jumped on the lead in the top of the fourth inning, as an RBI single by freshman Samantha Barney through the middle of the infield allowed Rynex to score after she led off by reaching on an error. Mason added an insurance run in the seventh, as a sacrifice fly by Rachael Davies scored Alyssa See after she reached on a one-out single.
Sophomore Miranda Cranford earned the win, her sixth of the season, after pitching four innings of shutout softball, allowing four hits. Anderson came on in relief and finished the final three innings, allowing one hit and one walk for her second save of the season. Amanda Davenport (2-11) took the loss in a complete-game effort.
The two teams will meet for the rubber game on Sunday at noon.
