Pepsi Florida Relays Complete Results
The George Mason track and field team competed in a pair of two-day meets in the Colonial Relays and the Pepsi Florida Relays, and Mason came away with 14 IC4A/ECAC qualifying marks on the weekend, including 10 new qualifiers.
At the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, the Mason men and women each recorded two individuals and two relays which met the standards. Sophomores Rachaunn Ruffin and Ja-Vell Bullard each surpassed the IC4A mark in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, posting times of 21.00 and 47.55 respectively. While Ruffin did not match his previous season-best time set a week ago in Raleigh, Bullard improved upon his time by one-third of a second.
The Mason men's 4x100-meter relay consisting of sophomore LaVell Handy, freshman Nick Vaughn, junior Dwight Webley and Ruffin recorded a time of 40.88 to become Mason's second qualifier in that event. The 4x400-meter relay of freshman David Verburg, Vaughn, freshman George Empty and Bullard also posted the second Patriot IC4A qualifier in that event, finishing with a time of 3:09.40.
For the women, senior Tiara Swindell met the ECAC standard for the second time with her mark of 55.22 in the 400-meter dash, while sophomore Grace Mavugara leaped to a distance of 12.31 meters in the triple jump to secure a spot in the ECAC Championship.
Mason's women's 4x100-meter relay comprised of freshman Crystalyne Clark, senior Marie Fields, freshman Cierra McGee and Swindell finished in an ECAC-qualifying time of 46.24. Another relay, the 4x400-meter of senior Latasha Rivers, McGee, Fields and Swindell also qualified with a mark of 3:36.98.
In Williamsburg, six individuals met the qualifying standard, with the lone female athlete, freshman Mandissa Marshall, clearing the pole vault with a height of 3.70 meters. Freshman Wes Sun also qualified in that event, as he recorded a height of 4.80 meters. In the 1,500-meter run, three Patriots qualified for the IC4A Championship in senior Sam Horn (3:48.42), freshman Chris Carrington (3:49.44) and sophomore Parker Boudreau (3:50.41). Finally, senior James Burns crossed the line in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:37.10, good for an IC4A berth.
The Patriots return to action next Saturday when they host the Mason Spring Invitational, set to kick off at George Mason Stadium at noon.
