Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Mason softball team took control with a four-run first inning and held off George Washington for a 6-3 non-conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.
The Patriots, winners of five of their last six games, improved to 13-17 while the Colonials dropped to 5-26 on the season in the two teams' first meeting in a home-and-home series this season.
Reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week Becky Anderson earned her seventh victory of the season as the senior started and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Elaine Nescio (0-6) took the loss after allowing the first five Patriot runs (one earned) in two innings of work.
Mason's scoring came right away as sophomore Tori Dudley led off the game with a double down the right field line, and she came home to score on a GW error which allowed Alyssa See to reach base. Another fielding error by the Colonials allowed the second run to score, and a one-out, two-RBI single by freshman Megan Blank drove in two more runs.
After batting around in the first inning, sophomore Katie Rynex brought Dudley home to score for the second time with her double to right-center field, making it a 5-0 game through one and a half innings. The score stayed there until the bottom of the fourth, when a two-RBI single by Heidi Penna cut the GW deficit to 5-2.
Mason answered in the next frame, as a fielding error off a ball hit by junior Kara Weiner allowed Rynex to score after she walked to lead off the fifth. GW added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Jordyn O'Donnell RBI single but could get no closer.
The Patriots will look to add to their win total when they travel to Drexel for a Colonial Athletic Association three-game set, beginning with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday in Philadelphia.
