No. 4 Virginia outscored George Mason 7-1 in the first half on its way to a 17-8 victory over the Patriots on Tuesday evening at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Madalyn Jamison and Emily Ellisen combined to score six of the Patriots eight goals in the contest.
Jamison added three assists to go with her three goals for a total of six points to lead all players. Ellisen and Callie Hoyt were the other two goal scorers for the Patriots with three and two, respectively.
The Cavaliers scored the first seven goals of the game before Ellisen scored with 1:32 remaining in the first half. After the half, Virginia scored three consecutive goals to take a 10-1 lead. The Patriots answered with three straight goals of their own to cut the deficit to 10-4, but that was as close as Mason would get, as the Cavaliers outscored George Mason 7-4 to end the game.
Senior Sara Longobucco played 51 minutes in goal for the Patriots with 10 saves. Freshman Brittany Pastrana played nine minutes with four saves. Lauren Benner was credited with the win for Virginia after making five saves in 54:45.
After three consecutive road games, George Mason returns home for its next contest. The Patriots play CAA rival Hofstra, ranked 18th in the nation, on Friday at 4 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
